INTRO TO CHINESE MEDICINE INTENSIVE

THE BODY AND THE COSMOS

Taozi Tree Yoga is proud to present a 5-day, Traditional Chinese Medicine Training over Chinese New Year. TCM emphasizes the importance of prevention over cure. In this course, you will learn the basic theories of TCM and how to put them into practice. Every day from February 1st to February 5th will emphasize a different part of the practice. From the fundamentals to acupressure to herbal medicine and more, you'll walk away with a comprehensive overview of this ancient healing practice.

Traditional Chinese medicine theory gives us a detailed, yet flexible, understanding of the functions of the body and its relationship with the social and natural environments we live in. Everything we “take into” our bodies and our minds can impact our health. This is why the model of health and longevity in Chinese medicine is the “sage,” a person who can regulate their behavior, thoughts, and actions in ways that bring them into greater harmony with the concentric circles of life in which they exist.

In this series of classes, we will see how these key ideas are applied in the practice of acupressure, herbal medicine, and dietary therapy. Each class will include lecture, discussion, and hands-on practice. No prior medical experience required.

 TRAINING PROGRAM

DAY 1: FUNDAMENTALS OF CHINESE MEDICINE

The body is a microcosm that reflects patterns of change and continuity in the macrocosm of the universe. Martial arts, landscape painting, feng-shui, and medicine in China are all based upon this insight. We will take a deep dive into what this has meant culturally and how it applies today!
  • Analyze your five-phase physiological and emotional constitution and begin to apply this method to help others.
  • Experience a Qigong internal-organ meditation to deepen your understanding of the inner landscape of the body.
  • Learn the basics of the microsystem of the ear, which represents the whole body, and practice using “ ear tacks" or "ear seeds" for self-treatment.

DAY 2: INTERNAL ORGANS & DIAGNOSIS

The core of clinical Chinese medicine is an understanding of patterns of disharmony in the body and the modalities to re-harmonize or regulate those imbalances. We will discuss the internal organs and their functions, as well as the roles of qi, blood, and fluids.
  • Understand the internal organ systems that are the core of the diagnostic system of traditional Chinese medicine.
  • Gain a basic working knowledge of tongue diagnosis and know how to read the basic markers for organ disharmonies through the tongue.
  • Practice analyzing case studies and to complete a survey about their own health.
  • Learn a set of Qigong exercises to actually experience the “Qi dynamic” that is at the core of diagnosing imbalances and re-balancing the body.

DAY 3: CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE

This class will introduce the principles of Chinese herbal medicine and its main applications. You'll gain a solid understanding of the basic concepts so that it is possible for you to create a set of home remedies for yourself and your family. We'll explore the vast tradition and the scope of the medical literature on the subject (much of which is available in English) and sample teas that can be used to maintain healthy digestion, sleep and mood in everyday life.

  • Learn the pathways of the 14 regular channels and their functions.
  • Learn the principles of Chinese herbal medicine and its main applications.

  • Explore what prepared medicines are readily available and sets of one to three herbs that can be used at home to maintain healthy immunity, improve the functions of the five inner organs and treat the “six forms of pathogenic Qi.”

  • Sample teas made by steeping one to three herbs that can be used at home to maintain healthy digestion, sleep, and moods.

  • Create shopping lists to create a set of home remedies for yourself and your family.

 DAY 4: DIETARY MEDICINE

In Chinese medicine, the internal organs that govern the absorption and assimilation of food, as well as other forms of information, are the “spleen and stomach.” In modern biomedicine, these organ-networks are also considered to be responsible for the assimilation and distribution of nutrients from the food and beverages we ingest. However, the health of our digestive system is based on other factors that are not always included in the usual view of diet and nutrition. Although different systems of medicine cannot be completely integrated, on an individual level we can blend theories and practices on our own journey towards greater health and wellbeing.

  • Learn which foods are recommended for each season and why (not only Chinese food!).
  • Create a diet that is targeted towards balancing each organ and enhancing the functions of each organ network.
  • Explore each “pathogenic factor” (wind, cold, summer-heat, dampness, dryness, and fire) and it's treatment with either food additions or eliminations

DAY 5: MERIDIAN CHANNELS & ACUPRESSURE

The acupuncture channel-meridian system is one of the oldest forms of healing on the planet. We will discuss what is known about their connections to facial planes, the nervous system, and development in the embryo. The paradox of clinical evidence showing the positive results of acupuncture treatment and the lack of a “scientific” explanation for its effects will be explored.

  • Learn the pathways of the 14 regular channels and their functions.
  • Palpitate below the elbows and the knees to diagnose stagnation, deficiency, or excess in the 12 primary yin-yang channels.
  • Understand how to select and use the 12 “Madanyang points.”
Practice an abdominal massage routine to regulate the internal organs.
  • Use meditation to help internalize the basic movements of the meridians.

 TESTIMONIALS FROM OUR LAST TRAINING

TCM training with Dr. Ochs speaks directly to our bodily understanding. Her training makes comprehensible essentials of the classical Chinese tradition: no extreme ingredients or regimes, just wisdom and reasonable practice, that makes sense. No mystery or magic, but great respect for centuries of history.  - Michelle Mope Andersson D.Min., Existential Wellness Therapist, Cultural Curator
Shelley’s TCM basis course was really interesting as Shelley has such a huge experience with TCM and is a good teacher as well. I personally liked the acupressure day and the herbal day best, as we learned a lot of things that we can directly use in daily life.- Tina, Germany
I took the TCM course and I loved every single day of it! The information was practical, accessible, and well-structured. I enjoyed working in small groups on the hands-on parts of the course like finding acupressure points and making herbal tea. I think the course is a fantastic way to start the journey of holistic health improvement.- Irina, Russia
